I think they missed Hargreaves more than anyone - Fergie's response to Iniesta and Xavi was lets take out a midfielder and give them some more room.

Barçelona were narrow because of the suspensions to the full backs and United didnt need to worry about width but the 4-3-3 didnt work. It works against weaker and less organised opposition but not against teams of Barça's calibre. Barçelona's 2 middle pair doing double work and to perfection. United must also be disappointed that their midfielders did not do well enough in possession and it was a mixture of poor ball retention and good work by the Barça two that led to that.

It would be interesting to see Utd supporters preferred line up before the game.

The difference was the two midfields, one that had a clue while the other didnt. Though many wil point out Utd's superior defence was poor on the two goals.

A question posed to me by a German freind of mine was can English clubs (now) only overcome Barçelona over a two legged tie rather than a one off game?

I think both Liverpool and Chelsea would have beaten Barcelona last night.

Both teams would have been set up to frustrate n strangle their midfield, & exploit Barca's weakend defence.

A few of my Spanish friends are giving it the Best in Europe - best League in Europe today - Well I told them straight - That Barcelona side would not win the premiership - haha - there is no chance those light weight players could survive a full premiership season.

We would have won it last night if we had got the team right. Too many monkeys on the pitch. Compare Park to Henry on one flank and we can all laugh together. Park is clearly one of the Fergie bum boys and their are others too. For Park to start a CL final ahead of £32m Berbatov and £30m (apparently) Tevez is beyond my belief.

Now either Park is better than both, or we have made some errors signing these players.

On top of that, Carrick was poor for all to see, yet he managed 90 minutes. The CM was where we lost the game, No doubt, yet Carrick managed 90 and Giggs managed 75 minutes....poor management? persisting with favourites? Hard for me to criticize Sir Alex, I'll leave that to non Utd fans, but it wasnt the team I would have picked and they werent the subs I'd have made. But what do I know?

I was surprised how United set up and the tactics they used. It worked to perfection against Arsenal, but Barcelona's midfield just kept the ball and exploited the space.

I agree that both Liverpool and Chelsea would have been set up to frustrate and strangle their midfield, and exploit Barcelona's weakened defence. Whether they would of won or not is open to speculation, but they certainly would have been in the game more than United were.

What is surprising is that is exactly how we beat Barcelona last year and I was expecting them to set up the same way yesterday.

I agree with your assessment of Carrick and Giggs and there is no doubt United lost it in the middle of the park, but that has been the weak spot all year. I think they have really missed Hargreaves this year and I hoping he comes back in good health and we finally get the best out of him. Anderson is hit or miss, sometimes he bosses the midfield other times he goings missing, but he is only a kid he just turned 20. He has played a lot of football at a young age and being in the Brazil side doesn't help with him, getting no breaks and all that travelling. I think he needs a couple more years to grow and to develop into the job. Park can be a real spark plug some games and has lifted the team at times, but he doesn't seem to be effective against very good teams. I don't think he should have started ahead of Berbatov or Tevez. There is not much United could have done at right back, Neville is too old, Rafael is too young and hasn't learned to defend yet and Brown is injured. So it had to be O'Shea, and I though he he did a decent job against Henry, Henry looked dangerous at times, but he only forced one great save from van der Sar and that was when Ferdinand was marking him.

I'm glad I'm sitting down for this because I agree with you 100%.
You without doubt deserved to be in the final but I was glad you didn't because I always thought Barcelona would beat Utd where as Chelsea would have fallen foul of something or other.
As Red said both our teams would smother them where as the way Utd play would allow space which is exactly what Barca want.
