PostSubject: STEVIE VOTED ENGLAND'S FINEST   Sun Feb 03, 2008 10:58 pm

(thefa.com)
Steven Gerrard has taken the vote in an online poll to find the fans choice for the 'Nationwide England Player of the Year'.

Missing just the friendly with Germany at Wembley during the year, Gerrard was involved in every competitive game and took the captain's armband five times.

Scoring twice, with both goals coming away to Andorra, Gerrard took his caps haul to 63 and when the poll opened he was the supporters choice.

"It's a fantastic honour, coming from the fans makes it very special to me - I'm really proud," Gerrard revealed.

"The fans pay their money and come and watch us play around the world, so to get their support is great.

"There were a number of players who did really well last year, Gareth Barry came back into the team and had some great games, Micah Richards was really consistent for someone so young particularly playing in defence.

"I know the fans appreciate how well those guys have done so to come out on top is a tremendous feeling."

Gerrard topped the poll on TheFA.com that saw fans voting in their thousands to choose from the 42 eligible candidates.

The youthful City defender Richards was the closest rival as Gerrard took 22% of the votes when the voting ended on 31 January.

The Liverpool skipper began the year as captain of his country with Spain the opponents at Old Trafford and played in eleven games for the Three Lions. Gerrard would captain the side on five occasions during the year, playing in all but one of the matches in 2007 - five of them at the newly opened Wembley stadium.

"Being back at Wembley was fantastic, it's a terrific stadium and a great place to play football.

"I was lucky enough to have made my debut for England at Wembley, so it had been a long wait to play their again.

"The old ground had a lot of history and growing up it was always a place you wanted to play, now we have a modern stadium that a new generation can grow up with and in time there will be a whole new history."

I struggle to see how Gerrard can be voted for this. I think he has been poor for over a year for England. When you compare his output for Liverpool against what he does for England its like Chalk n Cheese.

I am not getting at Gerrard, I just think this result shows how badly England have played throughout the Euro games and the injuries we sufferd as Gerrard is the only player to stay fit throughout those games, hence when you put your mind to it.... who else can you vote for? Was he the only player to play in every game in the qualifiers?

I think it has more to do with the high number of Liverpool fans on the Internet. You look at any poll on any web site that asks who is going to win the Premier or the Champions League and Liverpool always finish on top. Must be free Internet in Liverpool or lots of public access to it. I imagine if the same poll asked who should be the assistant captains, Carragher would have been one of them.

Ticktock - name me an England player who does give the same output for both club and country? (by same, I mean one of high quality)
There isnt one, so it's harsh to single Gerrard out for that and us it against him.

that's a bit sour to say the least - seems like a bit of bitterness with it too.
No, it's nothing to be be overly proud about with England's last year, and yes, it probably does have to do with Gerrard playing in all the qualifiers and also given 5 opportunities to captain the side last year - but England were consistently pathetic last year, and it looks like it may have been a vote to see the best of a bad bunch.
With Micah Richards coming second in the poll, a player who had 3 very good games, and the rest he played were 'normal', I dont think this vote is very valid, but to come out and say Liverpool fans voted the most and then to continue digging in at the city of Liverpool is just being overly biased.

Wasn't really meant as a dig. Just an observation. It seems to me that more Liverpool fans have access to the Internet than other teams' fans. Liverpool's official web site gets more hits than any other team, I believe it had been voted the best site and any football web site that runs polls always seem to have Liverpool or its players at or near the top. There are an awful lot of Liverpool fans on the Internet.
