Ted Bates Southampton’s legend nicknamed Mr Southampton played with club for 16 years and managed the club from 1955 – 73. It was only fitting that a large bronze statue would be commissioned to take pride of place outside the Scummers ground.
A Ted Bates fund raising committee helped with the Clubs board raised £112,000 and found a local sculpture and life long fan Ian Brennan to do the work.
This is what he came up with;
There was such an outcry at Southampton with the body, legs and arms appearing to be out of proportion, that they removed it after a week.
